The Reverend Edmund Harris
Priest-in-Charge

The Reverend Edmund Harris grew up in the Episcopal Church in Virginia, and felt called to the priesthood at a young age.

In high school, he traveled to Jerusalem to take part in the youth course at St. George’s College. Visiting places where Jesus had lived and died, and listening to the voices of the Palestinian Christian teenagers in the group opened his heart to the Gospel. In college at the University of Virginia, he returned to Jerusalem to take part in a gathering of young theologians, and spent two summers in southern Africa in communities affected by AIDS.

These experiences led him to apply to the M.Div. program at the University of Chicago Divinity School. As a ministry student there, he served as seminarian at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Oak Park, IL, his sponsoring parish. He also worked as a chaplain at a residential facility for homeless youth, and returned to South Africa.

After Chicago, he spent a year in the Episcopal Service Corps in Boston, and completed Anglican studies at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, where he received the E. William Muehl Prize in Preaching.

Following his ordination, Edmund was called as Assistant to the Rector at Church of the Epiphany in East Providence, RI, where he later served as Priest in Charge. He also served as Priest and Organizer of Church Beyond the Walls, the street church he helped to found in the Diocese of Rhode Island.

Edmund shares his life with his spouse Michael, who teaches Christian Ethics at Seattle University, and their cat, Madeline. In his spare time he enjoys cooking, traveling, and hiking, and English change ringing
